Helping others

As a family member, friend or colleague of a nurse, midwife or nursing and midwifery student, it can feel isolating if you are concerned about them. You may question whether you should be concerned, what to look for, and available support for them and you. We answer these questions here.

If you would like to chat to someone you can call our confidential support line 24/7 on 1800 667 877.

There can be a misconception that nurses, midwives and students are less likely to experience health issues because of their knowledge, skills and expertise. But studies suggest that nurses, midwives and students are exposed to high emotional, psychological, cognitive and physical demands, which may impact on their physical and mental health.

It can be difficult to support someone through a health issue, especially if they do not recognise their issue. Many people may find it hard to talk to someone close to them about their concerns.

Everyone copes with challenges differently. Some may use coping strategies that are detrimental to their health, such as isolating themselves from others, or using alcohol or substances to distract and/or manage the emotional pain and distress. Dealing with things earlier is always preferable as it may help to avert these behaviours.
